• Birthday cakes: These can be created in a number of different ways. A dowel can be cut to the appropriate length, iced with spackle or dimensional paints, and decorated with fimo or paper flowers. Fimo can be shaped into any form cake you want, or you can punch out a shape with a clay cutter. You can also make cakes out of paper (cut out a strip of paper, make a cylinder and glue. Glue this to a piece of cardstock, trim around bottom of cylinder. Repeat on other side. Ice with spackle).

• Plates can be made out of sequins or buttons that have had their holes filled in, then either painted or a picture from a magazine can be glued on. For silverware, cut out the appropriate shapes from an aluminum pie tin or silvered cardboard (found at party shops and places that sell cake decorating supplies). Streamers can be made from strips of ribbons that have been curled over scissors.

• Candles can be made from fimo, wire casings, painted toothpicks, even real wax (for the brave at heart). Balloons can be made out of plastic grapes (which can be repainted ). Presents can be fashioned out of blocks of balsa wood, wrapped in scaled paper, brown (Kraft) paper, fabric, or even hand-stamped paper (make your own stamp by carving out a shape from a gum eraser). Top off with mini cording, ribbon and a nice bow! A final touch...how about some nice flowers? Dried flower stock or silk ribbon roses can be put into a nice vase (homemade from a bead or purchased) for an easy arrangement. an use stickers, confetti letters/shapes/numbers and "Happy Birthday" wrapping ribbon. Banners can be made with a draw program, resized and printed out in color, or you can find confetti that you can string for a festive feel.
